Globally, 1.5 billion people log into YouTube every single month, and users spend over an hour each day watching YouTube on their mobile screens.
The H1 YouTube Ads Leaderboard is a great reminder of what’s coming this December 4th-8th, when we will be holding YouTube Week Malaysia to celebrate the brands, content, as well as the talented creators that make the platform a daily destination for entertainment, information and education. During this period we’ll also host the YouTube Malaysia Ads Awards 2017 for the second year, where we’ll award the top ads of the year across 10 categories. Trends from this half-year leaderboard
- Seizing the seasonal moment. While this year’s list isn’t as dominated by seasonal ads as in previous years, a third of the entries are related to two of Malaysia’s important festive celebrations -- Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. TNB’s Hari Raya ad in particular took the crown with its light-hearted tale of foiled ‘balik kampung’ plans.
- Ads that take their time. Long-form ads still dominate the list, with nine out of ten of the videos going well beyond the traditional 30-seconds TV ad duration. The format allows brands to tell compelling stories behind its products, such as McDonald’s video highlighting the steps their suppliers go through to ensure each meal served is of high quality.
- Lights, camera, ads! The ads’ cinematic quality also continues to strikes a chord with viewers, playing off more like TV dramas and feature films. Brands are focusing on telling stories that resonate first and selling second.
